The Anjali School Of Dance, was founded in 1996 to impart the ancient art form of Bharatanatyam to students in the Portland area. The singular vision of the school is to increase awareness of Indian Classical dance as a refined story telling medium to audiences around the world. Students are directed through a rigorous process of learning the basic steps and gestures to choreographing major pieces building on the fundamentals. Along with Anita Menon (Founder and Artistic Director), Archana Mungara (Director of Music), Sowmini Sengupta (Director of Programs) and Meera Kanagal (Director of Education), the school has strived to teach students the love of dance while adapting the art form for the next generation of dancers. These include dances choreographed to the stories of Red Riding Hood, The Wizard of Oz, Cinderella and Pegasus. As well as dances choreographed to western classical music (such as Beethoven’s 5th symphony) and dances blending Bharatanatyam along with yoga.
