Why are you most looking forward to being in A midsummer night’s dream?
I’m looking forward to working with the large variety of dancers and musicians who are bringing in their own creativity and talent into this production. I’m also very excited about the intense dance rehearsals after spending a year away from Bharatanatyam while in college.
Do you have a favorite summer time activity?
Aside from dancing, I love staying up late, sleeping in the sun and spending my extra free time reading.
If you had it your way what kinds of food would you take on a summer picnic?
In my opinion, any meal calls for chicken drumsticks and lemonade.
Do you have a particularly memorable summer experience that you shared with friends or family?
This summer I went on my first cruise for a family reunion. We visited islands off of Mexico, went cave tubing in Belize, and zip-lining in Honduras. One of the highlights for me was bargaining in Spanish, and spending time with 38 of my zany family members.

Alisha Menon - Robin Goodfellow (Puck)

Why are you most looking forward to being in a Midsummer Night’s Dream?

This production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is really about the mixing of many different art forms to put together a show. One of the main things I’m really looking forward to is seeing how my mom will use the different dance forms together in a single song. I also look forward to learning so much from Mom while she’s trying to create the dances and understanding the creative process she goes through. I can’t wait to bring all my intense training in traditional singing, dancing and acting and putting them together in just one production.

Do you have a favorite summertime activity?

My favorite summertime activity is white water rafting. My family tries to do this once every year. It usually ends up being in the summer because here in Portland, that’s pretty much the only time we get the sun :) We drive all the way down to the Deschutes River and I never miss a chance to jump in the water. When we get off the raft, we sit at a picnic bench and eat the picnic we packed. It’s one of the best days of the summer!

Do you have forest trail or hiking path?

One of my favorite places to visit is Hornings Hideout. It has a long disc golf course that is a pretty good hike, but it also comes with a lot of fun. My family went recently on July Fourth and had a ton of fun. We only started with the beginner course, but we still struggled to be on par. It was amazing. This location also rents paddleboats for people to use on the lake right next to it. We went on that and, unfortunately, we weren’t able to get ours to go in one direction! We spent half an hour on that. It was great! If you’re looking for somewhere to go this summer, I would suggest this place :)

Do you have a particularly memorable summer experience that you share with friends or family?

My favorite summer memory was in 2009. That was the year I had my arangetram, a solo, Indian dance debut which marks the graduation of a dancer. People in my family flew in from all over the world to come and watch. Most of my summer that year was spent in daily rehearsals for it. Finally, on August 29, the day came. In two hours of solid dancing, it was over. A job well done. I was ten years old and I will never forget the lesson I learned that summer. Hard work and discipline lead to success, with anything in life.

Kamya Chandra – Hermia

Why are you most looking forward to being in A midsummer night’s dream?

I was really excited to be a part of this production, especially when I heard about all the different dance forms that will take place, and how a few people will be playing instruments while others sing or do monologues. And that’s what makes this production so special, it’s so many performers doing so many different art forms, coming together to create a magnificent performance. I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all turns out!

Do you have a favorite summer time activity?

Other than dance, some things I love to do in the summer time include swimming, camping, going to the beach, hanging out with friends, or just staying at home and curling up with a book and watching TV.

Do you have a favorite forest trail or hiking path?

There’s this little forest behind my house that has a trail on it, and I love taking walks on it with my family and my cats, Tilly and Missy.

If you had it your way what kinds of food would you take on a summer picnic?

I would love just having sandwiches, raspberries and blackberries, and of course chocolate ice cream.

Have you attended a summer wedding? What was the best part about it?

Last summer I attended my cousin’s wedding in India. The best part of it was getting all dressed up before and after, and of course the day of the wedding for all the parties!

Do you have a particularly memorable summer experience that you shared with friends or family?

A couple years ago, my family and I, along with many friends, went on a week-long cruise to Alaska. Everything about it was great, from the 24 hour open buffet, to the fun sightseeing and whale watching that we did there. It was definitely one of the best vacations I have ever been on.

Meera Nair – Helena

Why are you most looking forward to being in A midsummer night’s dream?

I am most looking forward to being in this production just so that I can get the experience of something a little different than a normal bharathanatyam performance. I wanted to be able to play a character which is something that I have never done before. Just the thought of presenting myself as someone else seems very interesting to me.

Do you have a favorite summer time activity?

During the summer I don’t really like doing anything in particular but just to hang out with my friends and family and just soak up all of the wonderful Oregon sun. I do like to go to the beach and go camping during the summer also.

If you had it your way what kinds of food would you take on a summer picnic?

If I could bring any kind of foods I wanted to a picnic I would want to bring small sandwiches, some fruits like strawberries and cherries, some lemonade and also some ice cream

Do you have a particularly memorable summer experience that you shared with friends or family?

This summer I went to Hawaii for a 10 day vacation. It was amazing. The weather was very warm and the beaches were as blue as the skies. My family and I had so much fun doing site seeing and seeing all the different waterfalls and flowers that were in Hawaii. We went to Hila, Maui and my favorite was Kona because the weather was less human and the beaches there were amazing!

Lavanya Karunakaran – Hippolyta

Why are you most looking forward to being in A midsummer night’s dream?

Given my love of Bharathanatyam and the lore of Shakespearean romance, what’s not to look forward to playing the role of a warrior queen in this literary classic! I’m also looking forward to being with my friends in Portland and I can’t wait to partake of a production of this magnitude.

I enjoy long drives on bright summer days, soaking in the cool summer rain, and late summer nights on the deck reminiscing with girlfriends.

Do you have a favorite forest trail or hiking path?

I have such fond memories of hiking up Mary’s Peak, Oregon during my college days. The beautiful view of the Pacific to the west and the Cascades to the east is absolutely unforgettable.

Strawberries and cream, strawberries and cream, and more strawberries and cream.
